Replacing the Thrusters of a Drilling Ship

Offshore heavy lifting specialist BigLift was contracted by Transocean to transport four azimuth thrusters from the Port of Galveston in Texas to Port Gentil in Gabon. At the destination BigLift was assigned to assist in the exchange and overhaul of the thrusters of deep-water drilling vessel ‘Jack Ryan’. BigLift selected its heavy lift vessel Transporter for the job. The operation consisted of lowering the sling to a depth of 25 meter (82 feet) where divers connected a Green Pin® Bow Shackle BN to the old thruster and hoisting it to the deck of the Transporter where it was disconnected. The new thruster was subsequently connected to the same sling and the whole operation was done in reverse. Exchanging a single thruster took approximately four to six hours.
